Gifted Awareness Week 2011
13-19 June
Skype Chats

Here at Gifted Online, Mary St George will be offering some free Skype Meetings. You will need Skype installed on your computer, and a microphone (you may have a built in one). We will not be using webcams. You will need to take three steps:
  1. Register by e-mail, and give me your Skype username, just in case the e-mail address that Skype has for you differs from the one you use to e-mail me.
  2. Accept my contact request which will come to you via Skype
  3. On the evening of the chat, please wait for me to make the group call. If you call me at the exact same time that I call the group, mysterious things happen, such as half the group ending up in a separate conversation, or people going on hold!

Topics will be:
  • Identifying gifted children. 7:30 p.m., Saturday 11 June. We will visit several web pages in identification practices and talk over what may work in your situation, given that each school and each child is different.  Register by e-mailing mail4mary@xtra.co.nz.

  • Differentiation of curriculum for the gifted.  7:30 p.m., Monday 13 June. As above, a web tour with discussion of what seems likely to work with children you teach.  Register by e-mailing mail4mary@xtra.co.nz.

  • How to use Twitter to connect with "Tweeple" interested in giftedness.  7:30 p.m., Wednesday 15 June.  Please set up a Twitter account the day before. They sometimes don't work well straight away, and we will be tweeting one another, and learning to follow people and hashtags. Register by e-mailing mail4mary@xtra.co.nz.

  • How to join Second Life and take part in monthly gifted meetings. Fast computer and broadband required.  7:30 p.m., Friday 17 June. Second life is a virtual world, and becoming a member is free but requires a download. Join us in Skype, and be guided through learning to move your virtual self about, sit it down at meetings, adjust your view to watch presentations, and communicate with voice and text. Register by e-mailing mail4mary@xtra.co.nz.
Sometimes in bad weather, Skype has very poor sound quality, particularly over rural broadband. In most cases we will reconvene the following evening at the same time if sound quality is an issue. However, the Friday Skype session will reconvene at 10 a.m. on Saturday 18th if need be.

All chat times are in New Zealand time.

Join a facebook group on giftedness. Parents, teachers and advocates for the gifted welcome!
